Be A Fan
The two men responsible for construction of the Randle-Rather Building, James Polk Randle and Charles Taylor Rather, were civic and business leaders in Gonzales. Simultaneous construction of the first floor of the nearby courthouse building and excavation for the basement of this three-story Italianate Renaissance Revival style Randle-Rather Building began in April of 1895. The Gonzales Inquirer newspaper dated May 16 of that year described the Randle-Rather building as a "model building in every respect as to light and convenience." Although changes have been made to the building over the years, its original character remains. As a major structure in downtown Gonzales, it still rivals the courthouse in its impact on the town skyline.
