Be A Fan
John Fauth, born April 7, 1833, in Derrenbach,Bavaria, Germany, immigrated to the United States through New York in 1852, settled in Buffalo and worked for two years learning the carriage and buggy trade. In 1858 he married Margaret Kuhnle, born April 3, 1834, and they had five children. Margaret came to the United States through New York when she was only 18 years old and settled in Buffalo just as John had done. They came to Gonzales in 1858 and John opened up his own business. He built carriages, buggies, barrels and fine furniture from the abundance of native walnut in this area. The barrels were used to ship cane syrup and Tabasco peppers from J.B.Wells' Willow Springs Ranch to the McIlhenney Plantation in Louisiana. Although the Texas Historical Marker indicates that the house was built around 1857 by John Fauth, this is unlikely since Fauth didn't purchase the property until 1868 and only paid $300 for the two lots. A review of the tax value records indicates that this Gothic Revival style cottage was probably completed in 1868 with modifications in 1884. It features fourteen-foot ceilings and wonderful gingerbread trim.
