J.F. Remschel House

This beautiful Raised Cottage style house was designed by an architect named Warrenburger and built by local builder, Fred Meisenhelder, in 1907, for J. F. Remschel and his wife, Luella. The house features large rooms, intricate inlaid parquet floors and beautiful longleaf pine woodwork. Julius Frederick "Jule" Remschel was born May 26, 1870, probably in Indianola, Texas. He was the son of Julius Heinrich Remschel, an immigrant from Berlin, Germany. J. H. Remschel came to the United States about 1855 and in the early 1870's he established a lumber yard in Indianola. Eventually hurricanes drove people from Indianola and J.H. relocated several times before settling in Gonzales in 1882. Here he established another lumber yard that he operated until his death in 1894. The business was continued by his sons, Julius F. and Richard A. Remschel, and it became the Remschel Brothers Lumber Company.
