Isaac Newton Smead was born October 24,1815, in Seneca County, New York. On July 10, 1845, in Erie County, Ohio, he married Sara Giberson Richards. Sara was born April 25, 1822, in Center County, Pennsylvania. They came to Gonzales shortly after the Civil War and Isaac made a living as a cabinetmaker. Isaac and Sara built their house in 1876. It was originally Mansard style architecture but was remodeled as a two story Greek Revival style home by G.W. Wade who lived there from 1909 to 1946. During the remodeling, a model of the original house was found in the attic. Isaac died November 7, 1889, in Gonzales. Sara died September 7, 1909, in Bandera County where she had moved to be with her daughter. They are buried in the Gonzales Masonic Cemetery.
